EVANSVILLE, Ind. — New Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library CEO-Director Scott Kinney says he is impressed with the welcome he has received in Evansville and envisions a bold path for the institution featuring innovative programs.
"We're going to do new and exciting things for the community, we want to be community-driven. EVPL is everyone," Kinney said at a welcome reception held in his honor Friday at Central Library.
Prior to taking the post in Evansville, Kinney was most recently the director of the Mobile Public Library in Mobile, Alabama. He has also worked in Florida, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
Since his move to Evansville, Kinney said he's been moved by how welcoming and kind the community has been.
"I consider Nebraska home, so coming to Evansville is like coming home, coming back to the Midwest," Kinney said.

"EVPL has always had a great reputation, they were a five-star library at one time, had a great library and a great staff, and the opportunity to come back north happened, and it was on of those things where I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring."
He views being a librarian as a service to the community, which is why he's so passionate about his vocation and wants to make sure everyone feels welcome at EVPL.
"We do it because we love what we do. We love helping people succeed from all walks of life," Kinney said.
"Seeing school children come up from storytime to graduating high school and going off to college on scholarship. Having someone who may not be as fortunate and help them find a job, get housing or look for work. Those types of things are what librarians do every single day."
His immediate goal in this new position is to get to know not only his staff, but community members and leaders so he can better understand what kinds of programming to expand in Evansville.
Kinney says he believes there's a lot of opportunities in town for the library to partner with other local organizations to put on large events focused on arts and music.
He is also planning on introducing a business-centered program that he had success with in Alabama.
The program relies on a partnership with economic development agencies and would do everything from hosting job fairs, resume training, and having experts give presentations on how to start a small business.
Kinney was announced as the library's new director in November after a nationwide search following the departure of former CEO Cyndee Landrum, who left the position to be Deputy Director for the Office of Library Services for the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington, D.C.
