I just returned from the Do It Best Show in Indianapolis, and I can’t tell you how exciting that show was. I found products from small Tiki lamps at an unbelievable price to the new Dyna Trap Dot, and so many things in between. And one of the things in between is Hagerty Metal Polish. Don’t get confused, this is not just any metal polish … this is a polish with panache. Let me tell you what I mean.
A few years back we had a metal polish called All Gleam. It was wonderful because it would polish and then it had a preventative in it to keep the metal from tarnishing. OK, don’t just breeze through that. Most polishes don’t! They clean, and they polish, but they don’t have anything in them to prevent future tarnishing. The owner of All Gleam also had Superior Shield, which is a clear, protective coating. The two together were a tough act to follow. And then the unthinkable happened. The owner died, and he had not given the formula of All Gleam to the new owner. Sad.
Well needless to say I have been looking for a metal polish that had the same qualities. Unsuccessfully looking I might add. But this weekend I hit pay dirt! I was at the Hagerty booth seeing the chandelier cleaner and the jewelry cleaner, and then my eyes fell on a tube of polish. Hey, there are a lot of metal polishes out there and I thought this was just like all the others. But the sales rep told me that this polish cleans and polishes, and then it has a R22 tarnish preventative in the polish. As he polished a simple copper penny, I saw years of dirt and age disappear. And the penny had not just been cleaned but there was a finish left on the penny. It literally glowed like it was brand new. Hallelujah! OK, now we have two choices. Option 1, polish an item knowing it will tarnish in a couple of months? Or option 2, you can polish metal and it stays polished! I vote for the second option, how about you?
I know, not very many people invest in sterling silver flatware anymore. But how about cleaning and polishing your door hardware? Do your metal outdoor lights look a little sad? Do you have a copper sink? My mom does and she can’t wait to get this polish in.
I was so excited about this product that I videoed a “hardware minute” at the show and it will be on the website. When you look at the video, I think you will be as excited as I was.
Now to the email …
Question: I recall you wrote a couple months ago about a product recommended removing the residual mineral ring at the toilet water line. Unfortunately I did not save the article and cannot find the specific product on your website. Please tell me what product cleans toilets?
Answer: The product is called Delete Germ. It is by far the best toilet bowl cleaner. You are going to use it in the over-flow pipe in the tank. The quart size Delete Germ has a squeeze top that you can easily put about a ½ cup in the pipe. Delete Germ will go down the over-flow pipe and under the rim cleaning out the jets under the rim. Let Delete Germ sit over night the first time. Let me mention, when you clean those jets out you get a better flush, because you get more water pressure in the bowl. Then put a few rings of Delete Germ in the bowl to get rid of the hard water deposits. If the deposits are about the water line in the bowl, use a Flexi Scour to remove them. Call me if you can’t find Delete Germ near you.
Question: I have white kitchen cabinets. I know you talk about cleaning stained cabinets, but what is safe for white cabinets.
Answer: I would use Holy Cow All Purpose Cleaner. It works on pet stains, kitchens, bathrooms, soap scum and painted surfaces. It’s bio-degradable, non-toxic, and non- chlorine based. Just spray on and wipe off. You can also use it for grease spots in the laundry.
