Maintaining positive company culture is important for a business of any size. Company parties and other in-person events are great ways to build the culture and facilitate bonding between clients, employees, and partners, but how can you continue to do so if your company has gone to working remotely? Zoom happy hours can only be fun for so long after all.
Some companies have already found ways to continue building bonds between the employees by hosting online book clubs, virtual movie nights, and online talent shows. Canva has started hosting online yoga nights with its employees to keep them active during their lockdown. Prime Plus Mortgages has its employees rotate on leading their online book club where they discuss what books to read and what they like and don’t like about the books.
These methods have proven to be successful in maintaining a positive chemistry between teams during the quarantine, but there are plenty more methods you can try. What about an online show and tell where participants have the opportunity to show their artwork, cats, dogs, or other important objects around their house? Perhaps even hosting a game of online charades or pictionary would be a way to add some excitement and build connections between employees.
Not only is building connections between employees key these days, but it’s also important to find new and exciting ways to maintain the relationships with your clients and partners. Now that the days of going out to business lunches and dinners are over, there needs to be a way to keep those relationships strong as well. At Hawke Media, we have started an initiative to create online events that not only bring clients, employees, and partners together, but also their family and friends.
Night Hawke
Inspired by other companies like Canva and Prime Plus Mortgages, we wanted to create a different and fun source of engagement outside of marketing webinars and podcasts for our clients, employees, and partners that would also attract new people to come along for the ride, which is how Night Hawke was born. At 5 p.m. PDT every other Thursday, Hawke Media brings exciting, fun, and sometimes even delicious entertainment to you, your family, and/or your roommates.
Previous Night Hawke events have included Zoom magic shows, a Laugh Lounge comedy show, and a spoken-word poetry session. One of my personal favorite weeks was a cooking workshop with Zagat’s 30 Under 30 Chef Gary Nguyen, in which participants were provided with the grocery list and given step-by-step guidance from Chef Gary via Zoom that is needed to make an incredible gnocchi dish. Tonight, you don’t have to miss your corner bar’s Thursday night trivia because we’re hosting a trivia night, which will give contestants a chance to share some laughs and win some prizes.
Night Hawke has been an important part of keeping Hawke Media’s company culture exciting, encouraging, and fun during these times of uncertainty. We understood that our clients, employees, and partners would be at home in the company of their families, so it was important to us to encourage inclusion and make the events family-friendly. When we came up with the idea, we understood that people all over the globe are experiencing cabin fever and that we could help bring excitement and joy into their lives when they’re really in need of it.
It was also important to make our biweekly Night Hawkes open to the public, so anyone can join them. Members of our community are invited to these events via email, but you can RSVP on the Night Hawke page as well, with, just like with the Slack channel we created, the goal in mind of connecting ourselves to the community and the members of our community to each other. Our audience has been growing as the weeks go by, and after each and every Thursday evening session, we’re always thinking about how we can make the next one even better.
The bottom line is that company culture is important, inside and outside your employees, and, as a CEO of a company, just because you’re in the middle of a pandemic doesn’t mean you should slip away from caring about it. What Hawke Media has modeled after other companies that have also had success is creating online events that will be engaging, entertaining, and inclusive.
In business, I always speak on how important it is to be able to pivot quickly as a company, but it’s also true outside of business and around the “office,” which is now your kitchen table. It is important to adapt to your environment, and right now because the environment is one that is resulting in people working from home, building culture at home is going to be crucial.
