The tight end position has a chance to be a significant weapon for the Miami Hurricanes offense in 2020.
The uptempo, no-huddle system that offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is installing is known for getting the ball to the top athletes quickly in space.
Juniors Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory are two of the more athletic tight ends in the ACC going into the 2020 season.
“Offensively, there is so much stuff that we do in the pass game and run game and coach Lashlee does a good job of helping the kids understand what is going on,” tight ends coach Stephen Field said. “He is about making sure the small details are done right and the kids want to play for him.”
Lashlee’s offense proved to be quite friendly to the tight end position in 2019 at SMU.
SMU’s Kylen Granson tied for the national lead among tight ends with nine touchdown catches. He was 16th in receptions (43) and fourth in receiving yards (721).
Granson was targeted 63 times in 2019.
Jordan and Mallory were targeted a combined 82 times in 2019.
How Jordan, in particular, is utilized in the new offense could be interesting because of his versatile skills and athleticism. In the Dan Enos offense last year, Jordan lined up 69 percent of the time as a traditional inline tight end. He lined up 26 percent of the time in the slot and five percent of the time in the backfield.
At SMU in 2019, Granson was used in a totally different manner, lining up in the slot on 51 percent of the snaps. On 27 percent of his offensive snaps he lined up as a traditional inline tight end. On 15 percent of his snaps, Granson lined up in the backfield.
That type of diversity in terms of where a player lines up makes the tight end a weapon for an offense—and with Jordan’s athleticism it is going to be fun to watch how Lashlee utilizes him in the attack.
Jordan finished the 2019 season with 495 receiving yards and two touchdowns in nine games. He’ll have even more opportunities to make plays in the new style of offense.
“They use us in a way in which we are all over the field,” Jordan said of the new offense and how the tight ends are used. “We are outside, we are in the slot, we are in the backfield and we are lined up on the line. We are really just all over the field and coach Lashlee loves to throw the ball to us. He loves to get ball out to guys in space and let them go to work…This offense definitely shows our athleticism, but if you throw us in any offense you would see that those big dudes can run.”
Coach Field is excited about how the uptempo style will give more players opportunities to make plays during a game due to the increase in snaps.
“What is so exciting about this offense is that multiple players can be successful,” Field said. “It is a fast paced offense and it is not going to be pinpointed on any individual guy, so if guys work hard, they are going to have the opportunity to get the ball in their hands. I think that influences these guys to go super hard.”
It is also going to be interesting to see if Lashlee can find a way to get Mallory and Jordan on the field together at the same time.
Mallory stepped in for Jordan in the final month of the season and caught 16 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns with 70 percent of his production coming in the final three games of the year.
With Jordan and Mallory playing in this new offense, the Hurricanes might have one of the more productive tight end duos in the country in 2020.
Jordan is excited to see how it plays out.
“If there was an award for a one-two tight end punch, everybody in the country knows that goes to the University of Miami, Jordan said. “We are loaded.”
