Apple’s iOS 14.5 is very close, and an iOS developer has just revealed another new iPhone privacy feature arriving any minute now. Here are the details, as well as a lowdown on the other security and privacy features launching very soon.
Apple’s iOS 14.5 has been a long time coming, mainly because of the delayed app tracking transparency feature that will hurt the likes of Facebook. But it turns out that’s not the only privacy feature coming in the iOS 14.5 update.
First revealed by iOS developer Benjamin Mayo, another anti-tracking feature has been spotted in the latest iOS 14.5 beta. This time it is related to the AirTags which failed to launch last November. It comes in the form of an on-by-default Item Safety setting in Find My—“Item Safety Features” which detects unauthorized AirTags or devices that might be tracking you.
The addition to the iOS 14.5 beta is significant because the new feature—which stops a stalker being able to slip an AirTag tracker into a target’s belongings or pocket—signifies that AirTags are coming very soon. And from a privacy perspective, it means Apple users who buy AirTags can be confident that no one will be able to track their location in this way.
“Third party tracking hardware is most likely something that most people wouldn’t even consider to be an issue but it is still a possibility and more commonly used by ex or even current partners,” says Jake Moore, cybersecurity specialist at ESET. “This new feature could therefore help protect anyone from any unwanted tracking and easily notify them.”
However, he adds that an issue with Find My is, once you have agreed with a friend or partner to tracked, it doesn’t periodically remind you of this unless you look at the app. Therefore, people might, for example, forget to remove their partner after a break up which could lend itself to unwanted tracking.
In addition, Moore warns: “There are still other forms of stalker tracking such as stalkerware and other third party hardware on the market readily available so people should still remain vigilant to such tactics used illicitly. “
iOS 14.5: Apple’s most stunning iPhone update yet?
The iOS 14.5 AirTags feature comes as part of what could be Apple’s most stunning iPhone update yet. One exciting new feature effectively spells the end of the identifier for advertisers (IDFA), which hands back control so you can stop Facebook and others from tracking you on your iPhone.
Another new iPhone privacy feature coming in iOS 14.5 redirects Google Safe Browsing traffic through Apple’s own proxy servers to enhance user privacy and avoid giving any data to Google.
There is also a nifty feature that allows you to open your iPhone when out and about wearing a mask, using your Apple Watch.
Apple said iOS 14.5 would be arriving on iPhones in “Spring” and the operating system is now on its third beta. That means iOS 14.5 will drop any minute now—it’s usually on a Tuesday—so look out for it over the next couple of weeks.
