We didn’t get the result we wanted, but it sure was exciting. Shohei Ohtani was the favorite to win heading into Monday’s Home Run Derby, but he didn’t even make it out of the first round. However, it took a true battle to take out the champ.
Juan Soto took down Ohtani, hitting 31 home runs compared to Ohtani’s 28. Both hitters were tied at the end of the first round as each player hit 22 home runs. It took a crazy comeback from Ohtani to send it to a bonus round, as he was struggling through the first minute. He came back and forced a bonus round.
In the bonus round, each player gets an extra minute. Both players each hit six home runs, bringing their total to 28 and sending it into a “swing-off”. With this round, each player is given three swings. Soto hit three home runs, meaning Ohtani would have to hit three as well to send it into another round. Unfortunately, he missed on his first swing, which sent him home.
Ohtani’s furthest hit ball went 513 feet. Ohtani had six home runs travel at least 500 feet, the most in a single Home Run Derby since Statcast began tracking in 2016. His hardest hit ball was 117 mph.
Here are some images of info on every Ohtani home run.
