ITHACA, NY (WSKG) – New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-83) said he likely will not be in favor of a special session until Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul is sworn in as governor on Tuesday.
Heastie made the comments on Thursday in Cortland during his annual tour of the state.
“I think we got to let the new governor come in,” Heastie said. “And that’s why I really haven’t said much. I want to kind of let governor-to-be Hochul kind of get her sea legs and we’ll go from there.”
Hochul has not yet said whether she will call legislators back to Albany early.
Among the more immediate issues facing the new governor include a potential school mask mandate and issues surrounding the state’s rent relief program.
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked part of New York’s eviction moratorium, which is set to expire at the end of the month. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) extended a federal moratorium on evictions until Oct. 3.
And while many school districts have rolled out their own guidance on masks, some districts have yet to make an announcement.
During a tour of a New York City high school on Wednesday, Hochul told reporters she would have to address both issues within the first few days of her term.
Whether or not there is a special session, Heastie said the New York Assembly Judiciary Committee will continue some investigations into outgoing Gov. Andrew Cuomo. That includes how his administration handled nursing home death data and a book Cuomo wrote about the pandemic last year.
Despite having said Cuomo will not be impeached, Heastie maintains there will be a report into alleged sexual misconduct by the soon-to-be former governor.
