After a quiet year due to COVID-19, Alabama State University is thrilled to have students back on campus this week for the University's traditional Welcome Week! Students are being welcomed with a week full of activities and helpful resources.
“Hundreds of deeply committed faculty members, administrators, and college staff have worked hard to ensure our community is ready to meet the challenges of the year ahead,” said Derrick Brewster, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
As ASU begins a semester under historical and unique circumstances, the University is offering some important resources to support the students and their parents.
“We are providing them with all the information about COVID. Our Health Center continues to provide educational literature advising the students about COVID protocols, and our Student Government Association (SGA) is in the process of creating incentive-based opportunities to encourage our students to become fully vaccinated,” Brewster said.
Brewster noted before students returned to the campus, they had to provide a negative COVID test or vaccination results. Students who don’t have masks will be provided one. “We are a mask-mandatory campus. We are providing them with PP equipment to keep them safe. We are meeting students where they are.”
The University, Brewster said, is in the process of researching what additional COVID equipment the University needs to add to its inventory of COVID-related technology in order to continue to track potential positive cases within high traffic locations. The University also offers COVID-19 testing and vaccinations on campus, as well as sentinel (random) testing of ASU employees and students.
ASU President, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., said due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alabama State, like so many colleges across the nation, has pivoted to ensure a safe learning environment for its students.
“ASU welcomes our students back for the fall semester. Despite what we continue to face, I am filled with hope for the coming year. We know this unique moment will present opportunities for our students to develop the essentials on their ASU journey. We will do everything we can to encourage them to embrace this growth and to meet the challenges of the moment, and I am certain they will rise to the occasion.” said Ross.
Welcome Week is the traditional time period for all new first-year, transfer and commuter students to become more familiar with the ASU campus. Several student-service departments are working to give students some of the experiences of campus life while adhering to recommended COVID-19 protocols, including remaining a mask-mandatory campus.
“We want our students to know that no matter what happens, it’s always a great time to be a Hornet,” said Ross.
