Apple iOS 15: 3 Exciting New iPhone Privacy Features Coming Any Minute Now - Forbes

Apple’s iOS 15 has now officially been announced at this year’s Apple event, which means it’s coming any minute now. Apple has confirmed it will be with us on September 20, four days ahead of the release of the iPhone 13.

The iOS 15 operating system upgrade comes with a bunch of exciting new iPhone features, including several that are game-changing for your privacy.

Apple’s privacy push ramped up in 2020 with the launch of iOS 14, which included iPhone features to hurt big tech firms such as Facebook and Google. Now, iOS 15 takes things one step further, with new iPhone features that should really help to set it apart in the market. Here are the top ones.

iOS 15 privacy dashboard

The newly launched iOS 15 operating system comes with a privacy dashboard that will help you manage the permissions you’ve granted on your iPhone. The iOS 15 dashboard will show you all the permissions you have granted to apps, such as the camera and mic, and how often you have allowed these.

Building on the popular App Tracking Transparency feature that forces apps such as Facebook to ask you to opt-in to tracking you, the privacy dashboard will show app tracking too—but in a later iOS 15 release.

iOS 15 email tracking

Apple’s new iOS 15 operating system will also help to stop email tracking on your iPhone. It will do so through a new feature you can turn on to protect your mail in Apple Mail, which will prevent marketers from being able to record your IP address and other data each time you open an email. It’s a brilliant feature, and much needed in today’s tracking-heavy world, so go and turn it on as soon as you can (after downloading iOS 15 of course).

iOS opt in to Apple ads

When you install iOS 15, you will now be asked if you want to opt in to Apple’s own ads. Yes, I know—this should have always been an option given the iPhone maker’s strong privacy stance. But better late than never, just make sure you look out for it when you go through the iOS 15 welcome screens.

iOS 15 is better for security and privacy

On September 13, Apple issued iOS 14.8—an urgent iPhone update that fixes two issues including a zero click vulnerability that was being exploited by the Pegasus spyware. It goes without saying that you should apply iOS 14.8 now.

However, the iOS 14.8 update also confirmed another exciting part of iOS 15—the separation of security and feature updates. This means you don’t have to upgrade to iOS 15 if you really don’t want to, as Apple will still update iOS 14 with security patches. The iOS 14.8 release was the first example of that iOS 15 feature in action.

The launch of iOS 15 has been a long time coming, and it’s even better for your security and privacy than all the versions before it.

And there’s more to come soon. I haven’t included Private Relay in this list because it is still in beta. Part of the new iCloud+ package, this should be game-changing for your privacy on the web by breaking the identity chain.

I’ll be updating to iOS 15 as soon as it’s available, and watch this space for more demos and how-tos.
