Microsoft Documents Reveal Exciting New Surface Hardware - Forbes

Now we have confirmation that new hardware is coming from Microsoft, the tantalising Surface Pro silhouette on the invite to next week’s launch event looks ready to step out into the light.

The latest details come from the ever reliable FCC. Mayank Parmar notes the latest certification which reveals a 'portable computing device' from Microsoft, as well as a new wireless LAN module.

The FCC certification lists six different model numbers (C3K2010, C3K-2010, C3K 2010, C3K2010, C3K2O1O, and C3K20I0) but no further details on the hardware, no doubt we’ll see online benchmarking and retail SKU leaks in the near future. Microsoft is expected to launch two new Surface devices in the near future; the presumptively named Surface Pro 8 and Surface Go 3, so it is likely we’re looking at one of these family of devices.

At launch the Surface Pro 7 had seven specification variants, while the Surface Go 2 had six.

The second certification is for Intel’s new wireless LAN module. The assumption here is that Microsoft will be including WiFi 6 in the new hardware, which is something that would sit nicely in the mission statement of the Surface Pro line-up.

One of the curious questions about both devices will be how much Microsoft will move away from the current design of the Pro 7 and Go 2. These two devices are popular in enterprise environments and one of the advantages of the design is the consistency that allows peripherals purchased with older devices such as the fifth titularly titled Surface Pro and Surface Pro 6. Any significant design change, at least externally, will break that continuity.

No doubt the design of the Surface Pro X will be brought up in any discussions around the Pro 8 design. The Pro X has a much thinner 2 in 1, with smaller bezels, a lighter design, and longer battery life. Most of that is down to the use of an ARM-based processor that runs cooler and a lack of backwards compatibility to physically consider.

Could I see Microsoft doing a hard fork on the Surface Pro 8? Perhaps, but I can also see Microsoft making a lot of accommodations for existing customers that’s going to lead to people calling out the iterative design that is no longer as stunning as it once was.

Which is where the second certification comes in.This is for Intel’s new wireless LAN module. The assumption here is that Microsoft will be including WiFi 6 in the new hardware, which is something that would sit nicely in the mission statement of the Surface Pro line-up.

It’s going to be what’s inside that counts.
