Eight exciting developments set to be built in Lancashire by 2030 - LancsLive

The next few years will bring some exciting leisure developments and thousands of jobs to Lancashire.

Following the announcement of a new £250m oasis spa which is set to be developed near the Trafford Centre, we have decided to take a look at some of our county’s most promising plans for the next decade.

Preston Cinema Complex - Preston

Plans for the Market Quarter project - which include a multi-screen cinema, restaurant and parking complex -  are expected to be put before the planning committee this spring.

If given the go ahead, work could begin on the £50m development as early as this autumn.

The council has already given an estimated end date of 2021, although when the scheme was first announced in 2016, many hoped that it would be finished this year.

Houndshill Shopping Centre - Blackpool

Houndshill Shopping Centre has been bought up by Blackpool Council

Another one set for a 2021 finish is the second phase of the Houndshill Centre in Blackpool town centre.

The development, which is set to be built on the Tower Street car park, is reportedly going to house a new Wilko store on the ground floor.

If all goes ahead as planned there will be restaurant space, and a multi-screen cinema which will include an Imax-style screen.

Funding will include £5m from the government’s Future High Streets fund.

Construction is expected to start later this year with work expected to be finished in autumn 2021.

Eden Project North - Morecambe

The northern version of Britain’s indoor tropical paradise centre is now expected to be ready for customers by 2023.

Just this week LancsLive reported that a deal has been made for the land - at Morecambe seafront - on which the Eden Project North is due to be built.

Lancaster City Council has agreed to lease the land - which it owns - to Eden during the design, planning and development stage of the project.

Councillor Dr Erica Lewis, leader of Lancaster City Council, said: “Eden Project North promises to be a transformative project that will deliver considerable social and economic benefits for Morecambe, the district and the region.”

Eden began the planning process in June last year by submitting its Environmental Impact Assessment Scoping Report. A full planning application for the project is due to be submitted in early 2021.

Preston Guild Hall - Preston

Although no solid plans are in place for the theatre, which was subject to a closure in May last year, Preston City Council leader Matthew Brown said that the hall remains ‘a key priority’.

In November, it was announced that the venue would stage its first major event since closing, when it hosts the Lancashire Business Expo next month.

At the time, the council revealed that there would be ‘exciting news’ for the popular venue, although this has not yet been revealed.

The company which ran the Guild Hall was placed in administration by former boss Simon Rigby last June. The city council later retook control of the venue which it had operated from its opening in 1973 until 2014.

Reel Cinema - Blackburn

How the Reel Cinema in Blackburn will look

One of the closest to completion out of the entire list is the Reel Cinema complex in Blackburn, which is expected to be open by summer this year.

Outside works on the new eight-screen independent cinema, which is on the former Waves Leisure Centre site in Blackburn town centre - are nearly complete.

The site is located within the Northgate Conservation area and near to King George’s Hall and the old college building.

The 2,400m2 single storey cinema includes cafes, a dessert bar, an under-croft car park and a public realm outdoor space, better linking the Northgate – King George’s Hall – Blackburn College area of town.

Just this week Blackburn with Darwen Council updated residents, saying: “The work's scheduled to be completed in Summer 2020, just in time for the release of, The SpongeBob Movie, Top Gun 2 Ghostbusters Afterlife, and many more.”

Blackpool Conference Centre - Blackpool

The conference centre is based at the Winter Gardens

Building of the £25m conference centre at the Winter Gardens, has already been delayed due to hitches in the construction programme.

But this year it is being handed over to the council.

When finished, the conference centre is expected to welcome 2,000 delegates for the national Inner Wheel conference - which is taking place in April 2021.

Council chiefs have reassured residents that the town has not missed out on the bigger conferences, which often book years in advance.

Another new cinema complex for the county, this time in the heart of Burnley

The £26m Pioneer Place development was given the go-ahead earlier this year.

The project, an eight-screen Reel cinema with restaurants, bars, retail units, a public realm and associated parking, will be funded by Burnley Borough Council with support from Lancashire County Council.

Bosses at Maple Grove Developments, who are spearheading the work, said that work is expected to begin early next year with an estimated opening of November 22.

Chariots of the Gods - Blackpool

Another major development set for Blackpool town centre is the £300m Chariots of the Gods leisure complex.

The entertainment park will be built on a 17 acre site which includes the magistrate’s court and the former police station. It will take around nine years to transform.

It will be completed in various phases in accordance with a masterplan that was approved in December 2018.

The land, sold to developers Nikal Ltd and Media Invest Entertainment, will be transformed in various stages.

Firstly there will be an ‘enabling phase’ which will involve replacing the existing open air car park with a 1,300 space multi-storey facility.

The plan also includes new coach drop-off facilities and public realm works.

A hybrid outline/part detailed planning application for the car park is anticipated to be submitted late 2020.

Phase one, the first major phase, will see the main components of the entertainment complex being put into place.

When finished it will include: The UK’s first flying theatre, a virtual reality experience, a multimedia exhibition space and ‘Adventure Land’ among other attractions.
