The popular Greek bakery chain, Greek from Greece, has recently secured a lucrative expansion contract in the US. The expansion will increase its presence from 10 bakeries to 41, with hopes to have 100 GFG bakeries open, or in progress by the end of the year.

Greek CEO and founder, Georgios Drosos has been at the forefront of these expansion plans and is eager to create a unique Greek culinary experience.

Having already merged with another popular Greek bakery chain, Fournos Theofilos, in January 2020, GFG announced the exciting expansion plans with Fransmart, a restaurant franchise development company. The expansion will see GFG convert existing Dairy Barn locations that have been a mainstay in the New York area for over 70 years.

“This is an important move for our company,” GFG Bakery-Café founder and CEO Georgios Drosos said in the accompanying press release. “Combining our know-how with Fournos Theofilos’ investment and operational team enables us to expand more rapidly in the Manhattan area and establishes our place as the leading concept in fast-casual Greek bakeries and cafés. … We are confident that rebranding their locations to GFG Bakery-Cafés will enable us to create a unique Greek culinary experience for our customers and help lead the Pan-American expansion of the concept.”

The idea for GFG started in the 1930s. Great grandfathers began selling ‘Koulouria’ at the local markets and fairs, before opening two of the biggest bakeries in the famed “Lavrion” Athens. It was this experience that inspired the GFG team to make it their mission to share the delights of Greek Cuisine with the world.

As well as providing hungry American’s with delicious, traditional Greek pastries, GFG also champions Greek produce. Greek organic honey, Askada, and Krocus Kozanis, red saffron tea, are just some of the quality Greek produce you can purchase in-store.

Describing themselves as a small team of Greek people best described as ‘traditional pioneers’, the GFG bakery is a stylish take on the traditional kafenion we all know and love.

“George is the most dynamic restaurant CEO I have ever met,” Dan Rowe, CEO, and founder of Fransmart tells Fast Casual. “The company has invested tens of millions in its production and distribution facilities, making sure every GFG location has its entire supply line of proprietary, made-in-Greece menu items. It’s the ideal franchise — high volume, low start-up, few moving parts, easy for a franchisee to operate multi-units, and easy for store-level employees to get it right every day. The food is crave-able, and you can only get it at GFG.”
