CLOVIS, Calif. – Nearly two years has passed since the Rams hoisted both Mountain West Outdoor Championship trophies, making it seem every part of 733 days ago.
The Colorado State track and field teams return to Veteran Memorial's Stadium to defend those titles on the men and women's side, starting Thursday and concluding Saturday. The men have won the last three overall MW titles, counting their first outdoor one along with the 2019 and 2020 indoor meets. The women have won four outdoor titles with two coming in the past four attempts (2016, 2019).
The multis in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon get the meet started on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. MT and 5:00 p.m. MT, respectively. The day will be capped under the lights with the 10,000-meter men's race at 10:45 p.m. MT and the women's portion at 11:30 p.m. Temperatures for the first two days max out in the mid-90's, while Saturday calls for a milder 84 degrees.

Individual Title Defenders
Five Rams will defend their individual titles, including Jessica Ozoude (200m) and Lauren Gale (400m) on the women's side and Germain Barnes (400mH), Adam Dawson (Discus), and Eric Hamer (10,000m) for the men. Gale, Barnes and Hamer are doing so as the top seed. Dawson is the No. 2-seed and Ozoude is the No. 5-seed.
What's Left from the 2019 Outdoor Teams
Since the 2020 outdoor season was cancelled due to COVID-19, the time in between has been abnormally long. Almost so that the teams have different makeups and faces, but not all. From the 2019 women's team, 59.5 of the 159.50 points earned in their 38.5-margin victory, will return this week to compete. The same can be said for the men with 81 of 224 for 36.2% in their 53-point margin. However, not all has been lost and much has improved.
What's Left from the 2020 Indoor Teams
A more accurate barometer to use is the 2020 MW Indoor Championships before the shutdown by the global pandemic. With this season's indoor conference cancelled and not a full CSU team competing in the Championships at the Peak event, the 2020 MW indoor meet was the last legitimate championship feel for the Rams. When you look at those returners, 79% scoring comes back for the first-place men (17 of 28 student athletes) and 87% for the third-place women (18 of 28 student-athletes).
Key Additions to the Core
Newcomers play a part like Dawson LaRance, a transfer from Minnesota, who is the No. 1 seed for the 800-meter men's race and will more than compliment No. 4-seed Ryan Birkmeier – a scorer in the event in 2020 indoors. Liam Mather, previously at Iowa, makes a welcome addition in the 110-meter hurdle group as the No. 2 seed to join the gauntlet of top-seeded Barnes, No. 3 Andrew Doctor and No. 4 Kamal-Craig Golaube – all of which combined for 13 points last outdoor. Former Fossil Ridge High School product Avery Lux transferred home after spending time at Western Washington and now projects to medal in the hammer throw with the No. 3 seed in the conference.
On the women's side, it comes from the already strong throws section with Gabi McDonald and Haley Showalter. Although, Showalter scored in the weight throw last year, the senior hammer specialist had her eyes on the outdoor season and opted to return another year. McDonald has been on the team for three years but did not officially compete as a Ram until this season after appearing unattached throughout her freshman year and then redshirting. The rust does not show when she enters her first MW meet with the top shot put and the fourth-best discus to fit right in with the women throwers that are projected to win the shot put, discus and hammer throw. In the hammer throw, Showalter, Wisconsin's record-holder, is the No. 2-seed behind Tarynn Sieg who is also the No. 2 seed in the shot put – an event she earned All-America honors for in 2020 indoor. Maria Muzzio completes the projected Ram sweep in the shot with the No. 3 seed, while she will enter the discus with the top mark and aiming to replicate her championship she obtained as a freshman in the 2018 conference meet.
Megan Mooney, a Colorado native and graduate transfer from Florida State, represents CSU's top seed in the 1,500m at No. 6 and will run in the 5K to form a strong contingent of Rams that are coming off a NCAA Cross Country Championship appearance.
Long Wait for 2019 Freshman
What are not additions but feel like them are the 2019-20 freshman class that did not take part in their first outdoor meet until two months ago. The men have eight Rams (Mariano Kis, Allam Bushara, Ryan Blake, Lars Mitchel, DeVon Washington, Tom Willems, Max Christenberry, Calvin Banta, Mauricio Galindo Vega, Drew Thompson) that fit that description and have 14 top-10 seeds. For that same class, the women have five Rams (Bailee Carr, Emily Chaston, Ashlyn Hillyard, Jordan Lanning, Celyn Stermer) that collectively hold seven top-10 seeds.
First MW Outdoor Appearances for Vets
Juniors Thomas Chaston (No. 2-seed 3000 steeplechase, 5K), Ryan Birkmeier (No. 4-seed 800), Tom Oates (No. 7-seed 1500), Mason Brown (No. 12-seed 5K, No. 3-seed 10K) and Kelley Stephens (No. 4-seed 200m, No. 10-seed 100m) did not travel as freshman on the 2019 championship roster but are in line to score this time around. Senior Ryan Eddings (No. 8-seed 100) first came onto campus in 2016 and is making his outdoor championship debut after a career spent too much with our athletic trainer Anne Bradley.
Senior Jenna Diers notched the 11th-best 800m in school history a few weeks ago and will team up with fourth-ranked Carr at each other's first outdoor MW meet. Continuing with the ladies' distance area, Lauren Offerman, a Loveland, Colo. native and formerly at Texas Tech, holds the No. 7-seed behind Mooney in the 1500 and is CSU's top seed at No. 6 in the 5K. Claudia Burgess and Lauren Neugeboren also will provide depth for the Rams in the 1500, 5K, and 10k. Morgan Stewart in the throws has come along in the junior year, achieving personal records in the shot put, hammer and discus with the latter representing her best with MW's No. 6 seed. Also aiding in the throwing circles is Ashton Hallsted who is the No. 9-seed in the hammer and No. 11 in the discus. Yolonda Johnson has climbed up to 14th in CSU's all-time 400m hurdles list and will compete for the first time at conference with the No. 7 seed. Making a splash for the first time at MW will be Sydney Petersen in the steeplechase as a No. 11-seed.
Distance Doubles
In addition to being the projected winner for the 10K, Hamer also is the Rams' top seed in the 5K at No. 3. Mason Brown also will be running both for the Ram men. Lily Tomasula-Martin will double it up for the women too, being the No. 4-seed for the 10K and the No. 8-seed for the 5K.
Ol' Reliable Vets
Isa Bynum, a collective contributor of 26 points each of the last two outdoor championships, adds his experience with the No. 5 long jump and No. 8 triple jump this season. Beau Gordon represents CSU's No. 2 thrower in shot put (No. 7) and hammer (No. 5). Jacob Brueckman finished just outside of scoring in 2019 in 10th for the 1500, but stands a good chance to score this weekend as he is the No. 4-seed. Jasmine Chesson tries her new event – 400mH – at conference with the No. 11-seed and will be a part of both relay teams. Senior Briyana Bunson rounds out the women's 100m field where she finished 11th in 2019 and will be in the 4x100 team.
Vaulters
Celyn Stermer and Tameryn Coryell both notched PRs of 12'11'' this season to share the third spot in the school's record book. They go into this weekend ranked 4-5. Eldridge Harris for the men goes in with the No. 6-seed with a season-best 15'9.25'' (18th in CSU history).
True Freshman
Three members of the 2020-21 freshmen class earned spots in Eldridge Harris, Grace Goldsworthy and Janyah Jasper. Harris, of Roswell, Ga., in addition to the pole vault, will be in the 100m (No. 9-seed) and could potentially be in the 4x100m relay. Jasper, of Dallas, Texas, is CSU's top 100m runner with a No. 7-seed and will be running in the 200m (No. 12-seed) as well as the 4x100m relay.
Steeplechase
The Chaston siblings lead the way for the Rams with Emily taking the No. 6-seed into the women's 3000m steeplechase and Thomas the No. 2-seed. Both have formidable running mates with Sydney Petersen (No. 11-seed) and Lars Mitchel (No. 5-seed), respectively, in tow.
Multis
Two ladies medaled in the 2020 indoor pentathlon and the same number is projected to replicate that in the heptathlon. Jordan Lanning, the No. 2-seed, obtained CSU's 12th-best hep in her first-ever attempt at the Sooner Invite, while No. 3-seed Lexie Keller notched the school's 16th-best score in the same meet after not competing in a hep since her freshman campaign in 2019. Lurking with the No. 7-seed is Amelia Harvey who holds the fifth-best score in school history and was the silver medalist in 2020 indoors. Outside of the multi, Lanning is entered into the 100mH (No. 5-seed) and the high jump (No. 2-seed). Keller also will be in the high jump (No. 8-seed) and then CSU's top long jump participant (No. 5-seed). Harvey is taking a flyer in the 100mH, long jump and triple jump.
On the men's side, CSU leans on two 2019-20 freshmen that have competed in one decathlon each – both at the Sooner Invite. Mauricio Galindo Vega is ranked No. 7 going in with Drew Thompson right behind him at No. 8. Galindo Vega earned six points for the men in the 2020 indoors after placing third in the heptathlon. Individually, they both will compete in the javelin, while Galindo Vegas is the No. 9-seed in the triple jump and Thompson is the No. 10-seed in the long jump.
Relays
The final set of four won't be finalized until closer to race time.
- Men's 4x100: No. 2-Seed; Eddings, Washington, Stephens, Harris, Mather from CSU Pueblo Meet
- Men's 4x400: No. 3-Seed; Washington, Golaube, LaRance, Willems, Stephens from Sooner Invite

USTFCCCA Rankings & Competition
In the #EventSquad rankings, the men nationally are No. 13 in 110mH, No. 8 in discus, No. 16 in hammer, No. 18 in the 10K. For the women, the discus is ranked third in the country with hammer and shot put at nine and 10, respectively.
For the USTFCCCA conference ratings index, the CSU women are first with 1,035.31. San Diego State (877.07) and UNLV (818.86) round out the top three. The Running Rebels won the 2020 indoor with the Aztecs taking second and Rams third. The men are second in the TFRI with 1,436.58 behind Air Force (1,529.51) and in front of Utah State (976.43).
